The wrong materials in the Canary Islands fail faster than in almost any other climate in Europe. Imported concrete products crack under the thermal expansion caused by ground heat from volcanic rock. Certain sealants degrade within two seasons under UV intensity that is significantly higher than mainland Spain. Improper drainage — rarely a problem in wet climates — causes pooling during the intense but infrequent rainstorms that hit the islands. The Case for Volcanic Stone
Volcanic basalt and calcareous sandstone are not simply aesthetic choices — they are materials that have performed in this specific climate for centuries. They are dimensionally stable under the thermal cycling that damages imported concrete products. They absorb and dissipate heat without the surface degradation that affects smooth concrete under direct Canary Islands sun. And they look genuinely of-the-place, because they are.

Beyond material selection, hardscaping in the Canary Islands requires correct drainage specification. The islands receive under 150mm of annual rainfall, but when rain does fall — typically in brief, intense events in winter — drainage failures become immediately visible. We excavate to the depth the material and load-bearing requirement demand, compact the sub-base, and install drainage channels before any surface is laid.

Laying, Jointing, and Sealing
We lay the surface to specification, joint with appropriate materials for thermal movement, and seal with a UV-stable product rated for the local conditions. We carry out a drainage flow test before handover.

The ground heat generated by volcanic rock creates thermal cycling — surfaces expanding in daytime heat and contracting overnight — that is more extreme than in temperate climates. Many imported concrete products are not rated for this range. They develop hairline cracks in the first season which widen over time, allow water ingress, and require replacement within three to five years. Locally quarried volcanic stone is dimensionally stable because it is mineralogically adapted to these conditions.

Volcanic basalt and calcareous sandstone are our first preference for the reasons above. We do work with other materials where the brief requires it — pool surrounds often call for specific slip-resistance ratings, for example — but we will always advise on which material will perform best in the specific conditions of your site and why.

Low average rainfall does not mean drainage is unimportant. The Canary Islands receive most of their annual rainfall in a small number of intense events. A surface without adequate falls and channels will pool during these events, damaging adjacent planting and potentially the building. We design drainage into every hardscaping project as a standard element, not an optional extra.

In many cases, yes. If the existing material was locally quarried, we can usually source a compatible product from the same quarry or a regional supplier. If the existing material is imported, matching is harder but we can get close in tone and texture. We assess this at the site visit and advise before you commit.

This depends on the scope and the municipality. Minor paving works within your own property boundary typically do not require a permit. Retaining walls above a certain height, driveway modifications that affect a public road, and works within certain protected zones may require a licencia de obra menor. We advise on this at the assessment and flag if a permit is likely to be needed before we start.
