Outdoor Lighting for the Canary Islands — Designed for Atmosphere, Not Car-Park Illumination
The Canary Islands night is one of this climate's genuine assets — warm, clear, and in many areas remarkably dark. Standard European commercial lighting specifications turn it into a car park. Overlighting with cool-blue LEDs destroys the atmosphere, creates light pollution, and produces a result that looks nothing like the property in the marketing photographs. At the other end, cheap solar spike lights fail within a season under UV exposure they were not rated for, produce insufficient light for safety, and look poor in property photographs. We design outdoor lighting schemes — not fixture placement lists — that use warm-toned, low-glare LEDs to create atmosphere after dark, define pathways safely, and showcase the garden design with the quality of light it was designed for. All fittings are rated for coastal conditions. For holiday-let operators, we include a photography-optimised lighting pass.

Before & After
Before: A holiday villa terrace unlit at night — effectively unusable and absent from listing photographs. After: Warm 2700K LED pathway lighting, terrace uplights on specimen plants, and step lighting — all on a single dusk-to-dawn timer. Guest use of outdoor space increased.
The Difference Between Lighting a Space and Illuminating It Correctly
Colour temperature determines the character of a lit outdoor space more than any other variable. Standard commercial LEDs in the 4000–5000K range (cool white to daylight) are selected for energy efficiency in industrial contexts. Applied to a private garden terrace in Fuerteventura at 9pm, they make the space feel like a forecourt.
We specify 2700K LEDs — the warm-white end of the LED spectrum — as a default for all living and entertaining areas. This is the colour temperature closest to natural incandescent light and the tone that photographs well in both automatic and manual exposure settings. It is also the tone that does not destroy night adaptation for people sitting outside under one of the clearest night skies in Europe.
Beam angle is the second critical variable. Downward-directed fixtures — path lighting, step lights, in-ground uplights directed into planting rather than skyward — keep the light where it is needed and minimise the light pollution that affects both the enjoyment of the night sky and the ecology of nocturnal insects and birds.
For holiday-let operators specifically: exterior lighting is among the highest-return investments available in property presentation. A well-lit garden improves listing photograph quality, extends usable outdoor hours for guests, increases the number of positive reviews mentioning outdoor space, and provides safety lighting that reduces the risk of after-dark slips on pathways and steps.

Site Assessment and Lighting Brief
We walk the site at or after dusk if possible — because the character of existing light and shade is only visible in the conditions the design must address. We agree the brief: which areas need functional lighting, which need atmosphere, and what the key features are to showcase.

Lighting Design
We produce a zone-by-zone lighting design: fixture positions, beam angles, colour temperatures, lumen outputs, and cable routes — all documented. We include the energy calculation and control specification before ordering any materials.

Installation
We install all cables in conduit to Spanish electrical standards, mount fixtures at the specified positions and angles, connect controllers, and test each zone. We confirm the supply is adequate for the installed load before connecting.

Photography Pass and Handover
For holiday-let and rental properties, we carry out a photography pass — adjusting light angles and intensities to optimise the garden for listing photography. We hand over a simple control guide for normal evenings versus photography or entertaining occasions.

For living and entertaining spaces, 2700K (warm white) is the right specification. It creates an atmosphere rather than a worksite. Cool-white LEDs (4000K+) are appropriate for security lighting or commercial access areas, but they are the wrong choice for a terrace or garden where the goal is to create a pleasant outdoor environment after dark. We specify 2700K as a default for all inhabited outdoor areas.

At minimum, IP54 (dust-protected, splash-resistant) for standard garden and terrace fixtures. For step lights recessed into a surface, fixtures near pool edges or other water features, or any fittings likely to be hosed down, we specify IP65 or IP67. The coastal salt-air environment also affects fixture longevity — we select marine-grade fittings for exposed coastal properties.

Often yes. Where existing beds and surfaces are mature and undisturbed, we use low-voltage systems with surface-routed conduit that can be buried shallowly without significant disruption. For terrace areas, we advise on the best approach at the site assessment — sometimes it is worth lifting a paving section to run conduit properly; sometimes a surface conduit route is preferable.

Modern LED garden lighting uses very little power. A typical residential lighting scheme of 20–30 fixtures at 5–10W each runs at 150–300W total. At 6 hours per night, that is under 2kWh per day — a minimal addition to a household electricity bill. We include a full energy calculation in the lighting design document.

Dark Sky lighting standards require downward-directed fixtures, warm colour temperature (typically 3000K or below), shielded light sources that do not contribute to skyglow, and in some cases lumen caps per fixture. We design to these principles as standard for all residential schemes.
