Why Generic Lawn Care Fails Here — and What We Do Instead
Fuerteventura's average annual rainfall is under 150mm. Conventional lawn care tells you to compensate by irrigating more. We tell you to plant grass that does not need compensating.
Cynodon grass varieties — Bermuda types adapted to Atlantic coastal climates — tolerate the saline winds coming off the ocean, the volcanic soil pH of 5.5–6.5, and dry periods that would kill European ryegrass within a season. They grow more slowly, require less mowing, and use a fraction of the water a conventional lawn demands.
We also work with the soil biology rather than against it. Volcanic soils support mycorrhizal networks — fungal associations that help plant roots access water and minerals — which are disrupted by synthetic fertilisers. We use organic inputs that feed the soil food web: compost, slow-release organic nitrogen, and mineral amendments that suit the local pH.

Drought-tolerant varieties such as Cynodon (Bermuda grass) establish well in volcanic soil and tolerate the dry seasons that are normal on the island. This depends on the grass species, the season, and the condition of the lawn. Most residential lawns require fortnightly visits during the growing season (spring–summer) and monthly visits during the cooler months. We set the visit frequency at the initial assessment and adjust it as conditions change.

Yes. A significant part of our client base manages properties in the Canary Islands from abroad. After the initial on-site assessment (which can be arranged with a key holder or property manager), we maintain the lawn and send a brief report after each visit. We flag issues before they become problems, so you are not managing by crisis.

We do not impose a minimum contract. We ask for two weeks' notice to pause or cancel a programme. Most clients find that seasonal programmes (typically 12 months) work best because lawn health is cumulative — one good season follows another — but we start wherever you are and go from there.
