Care & Maintenance

Lawn Care & Maintenance for the Canary Islands — Built for Arid Conditions, Not European Ones

Conventional lawn care advice — water generously, apply synthetic fertiliser, mow to 3cm — destroys turf in Fuerteventura. Overwatering causes fungal disease in volcanic soil. Synthetic fertilisers accelerate nutrient burn. European grass species struggle through their first dry summer and rarely survive the second. We manage lawns using drought-tolerant grass varieties adapted to arid Atlantic climates, organic soil conditioning that improves volcanic soil biology, and a seasonal maintenance calendar written for the Canary Islands — not for the UK or mainland Spain.

Overview of Lawn Care & Maintenance

Before & After

Before: Lawn Care & Maintenance work

Before: Patchy, yellowing turf — the result of a European maintenance schedule applied to Fuerteventura conditions. After: Established Cynodon turf, 14 months after conversion to a drought-adapted programme. Irrigation water use reduced by 42%.

Why Generic Lawn Care Fails Here — and What We Do Instead

Fuerteventura's average annual rainfall is under 150mm. Conventional lawn care tells you to compensate by irrigating more. We tell you to plant grass that does not need compensating.

Cynodon grass varieties — Bermuda types adapted to Atlantic coastal climates — tolerate the saline winds coming off the ocean, the volcanic soil pH of 5.5–6.5, and dry periods that would kill European ryegrass within a season. They grow more slowly, require less mowing, and use a fraction of the water a conventional lawn demands.

We also work with the soil biology rather than against it. Volcanic soils support mycorrhizal networks — fungal associations that help plant roots access water and minerals — which are disrupted by synthetic fertilisers. We use organic inputs that feed the soil food web: compost, slow-release organic nitrogen, and mineral amendments that suit the local pH.

The practical result: a lawn that is consistently healthy through dry summers, costs less to run than a conventionally managed equivalent, and looks better in year three than year one.

Why our approach to Lawn Care & Maintenance works

How We Manage Your Lawn

  1. Site Assessment

We visit your property, assess the current grass species, soil condition, existing irrigation setup, and sun and wind exposure. We identify what is failing and why, and document the findings in writing.

  2. Species and Programme Design

We recommend the right grass species for your specific conditions and design an organic maintenance programme — mowing schedule, fertilisation calendar, irrigation adjustments — calibrated to the Canary Islands seasonal cycle.

  3. Ongoing Maintenance Visits

We carry out maintenance visits at the agreed frequency, adapting the programme by season. If you are not on-site, we send a brief report after each visit.

  4. Annual Review

At the end of each growing season we review the lawn's condition, adjust the programme for the coming year, and flag anything that needs attention before the dry season begins.

What It Costs

Starting from €45 per visit

Maintenance visits start from €45 per visit, depending on lawn size and the scope of work agreed at the initial assessment. The initial site assessment is free and carries no obligation. Programmes that include organic soil conditioning, fertilisation, and seasonal overseeding are priced based on the full annual scope — contact us for a written quote after the assessment.
